They come from 26 countries, and 464 told us why in their own words. Again and again, they say efoils are clean and quiet, that riders are safe and respectful, and that riding is good for body and mind.

Since the permit was revoked in 2024, efoils have been banned along all 37 km of Cape Byron Marine Park, where Fliteboard was invented, because the park’s rules treat them like jet skis. The Department that manages the park says hydrofoils “did not exist and were not considered” when those rules were made.

Riders and non-riders alike point to what an efoil doesn’t do. It burns no fuel, puts no oil or exhaust in the water, and makes no wake and only a soft hum.
“Foiling and eFoiling are low-impact ways for me to enjoy our waterways and marine parks. They are quiet, produce no emissions into the water, and allow me to experience the ocean without fishing or disturbing marine life.”
“I’ve seen first hand that this product turns people into “water people”, not only does this bring them immense joy and connection to the ocean, but it makes them more environmentally conscious about the future of our planet and oceans, ultimately being a net benefit for the marine parks.”
“Efoils are electric, quiet and pollution free. How much better does it get for the environment?”

“I don’t agree with limiting environmentally friendly water sports. We should be encouraging them in the same way EVs are.”
“This activity has the potential to get more people aware, active and invested in the health of the marine environment.”
“I think the fact that there is no wake, noise or pollution from this leisure toy makes it a much better option than a lot of boats.”
“The ocean is a big place. We want to encourage clean green non polluting water sports.”
“Foiling while using an efoil or a motorised assist method is an incredible way to help people get on the water and has such a low impact on the marine environment, especially when compared to boats or jet-skis.”
“Fliteboarding has given me a totally new appreciation for our beautiful bays and oceans and I feel part of the ecosystem.”
“Foils are a clean and Safeway so local residence to enjoy themselves on days where there is no surf or wind for Kite surfing. They do far less harm than boats to marine life.”
“Flitboard is an accessible, easy to learn way to enjoy the natural environment”
“Efoils - the battery powered boards of many different brands, need to be recognised by the government as a separate entity and treated as such and not lumped in with any other watercraft type. They are quiet, eco friendly and low speed and operated by people who respect other water users (both human and animal). They have been around long enough now for the government to now act in this regard.”
“Efoil/ foil assist boards are obviously nothing like the petrol jet skis which are loud/ smelly & chop up the water with their large wakes I have this experienced regularly at tourist destinations along the east coast.”
“It effects everyone who rides an efoil. It should have its own classification being electric, low noise, no environmental impact etc.”
“It just doesn’t make sense to ban something that is so environmentally friendly, it will impact t the places we go for holidays”
“Efoils are safe, quiet, and harmless to the environment and riders are generally very safety conscious”
“It’s quiet and makes no wake so should be allowed. It is not a jet ski...”
“I love slowly and silently cruising around our coastline”
“We cause no problems, little noise and no wake.”
“Fliteboard is clean energy unlike jet skis.”
“Efoiling is a healthy endeavour - fun, relatively safe, and usually harmless to the environment It’s the closest thing to riding a magic carpet - comparable to riding in deep powder (snow)... extremely energy efficient & a joy for both rider & the unfamiliar spectator. It can get one back into watersports (always a good idea) & is the best entry into foiling in general Unlike jetskis & power boats, there’s nil external noise, air or water pollution; totally inoffensive & in tune with nature... poetry in motion Efoiling is synergy”
“Because there are enough regulations for watercraft already and e-foils which create no wake and are very environmentally friendly unlike all other watercraft should not be the subject of the same restrictions or prohibitions that apply to boats and jetskis which unlike e-foils create significant wake, are not environmentally friend and have significant safety issues if not operated in accordance with all applicable regulations.”
“E-foils have such minimal environmental impact and move at relatively modest speeds compared to other recreational craft so it seems completely inappropriate to group and regulate them in ways more suited to jet skis”
“Byron Bay holds a special place in my heart, and some of my most unforgettable moments have been gliding along its coastline, connecting with the ocean and even sharing the water with the marine life.”
“Byron bay is an amazing part of the country where these should be allowed to be ridden. They are harmless and do not pollute the water like boats or JETSKI’s.”
“Protecting public waterways for efoils ensures our community can enjoy clean, low emission and low impact water sports in our shared waterways”
“It’s a great sport. Does not pollute or harm the environment and in my experience foil riders are like minded and respect their environment”
“Foiling is safe, quiet, better for the environment than petrol powered vessels. I would like to see it be allowed and encouraged everywhere.”
“No reason to be banned, just another tax on free will in our environment. I am signing to support the Efoil community and their bussiness”
“Byron bay is a pristine marine environment which should be explored and appreciated with the use of environmentally friendly watercraft.”
“We’re usually well away from other water users. Create no noise and no wake. Foiling is a major part of my lifestyle.”
“EFoiling is silent, pollution free and a great way to enjoy the waterways. There should be no comparison to Jet Skis.”
“I think we shy be able to ride anywhere in Australia as the impact on everyone and the environment is negligible”
“Efoiling is a quiet and peaceful way to enjoy our oceans and be at one with the creatures that inhabit them.”
“Should be allowed anywhere other propulsion crafts (dinghies etc) are allowed, being less noisy or intrusive”
“Finally a pollution free mechanized water activity for everyone. It would be welcomed with open arms.”
“It’s quiet, allows me to engage with the ocean in a meaningful and harmless way. Keeps me fit.”
“Connecting with the environment is very important to me and none more than the water.”
“Its the cleanest option with no noise or chemical affects on surrounding”
“There is nothing more environmentally friendly apparatus than an efoil”
“It’s the least impact on marine life and eco systems on the water,”
“Harmless and environmentally friendly way of enjoying the ocean.”
“Common sense needs to prevail. No pollution, no noise, no harm.”
“I support innovation and electric more environmental products”
“Rule doesn’t make sense. Minimal carbon and noise emissions”
“Silent electric unpowered riding in the ocean. Why ban it”
“Because our sport is not damaging to environment”
“Non-fuelled powered craft Great for environment”
“I believe eFoil users should have the same opportunity to enjoy areas where other water sports are permitted. eFoils are battery-powered, produce no direct exhaust emission while operating, and have low noise. their operating time is also naturally limited by battery capacity. We simply ask for fair and reasonable access, subject to appropriate safety and environmental regulations.”
“I believe this is an eco friendly sport with virtually no sound pollution and the people doing the sport are of all ages and benefit from the exercise. Marine life is by no means prejudiced and I’m truly surprised that something like surfing would be allowed when I consider this far safer.”
“This is my livelihood as a Flite partner and Fliteschool I always advocate for share water ways. Also, coming from the wake sports industry I see efoiling more sustainable than doing anything behind a wake boat. Plus I genuinely love the sport.”
“Because these regulations are irrational and damaging. Vessels that cause far more harm and pollution are allowed, yet something that is silent, clean and produces no wake are banned.”
“A watersport which is positive for the environment, silent and an unbelievable experience to glide over the water and explore the nature. I just love it.”
“We make no noise, no waves and there is no kind of pollution involved. Everyone is quite happy after an efoil ride. So why should this be banned?”
“This matters to me because these vessels do not generate noise or wakes and there is no spillage of gasoline, oil or other toxic materials.”
“Efoiling is a highly environmentally sustainable, healthy & safe water sport. It should be pushed by governments instead of banned.”
“Efoiling is so much fun, no wake, no gasoline. Just silent and fully electric, super efficient. It’s the future of watersport.”
“It’s very important everyone can e-foil where they want without disturbing the environment and people on the water”
“I love riding /flying my Efoil and do believe they are miss understood and needs to be labeled as none wake craft”
“Great sport, very little harm to the environment. Little to no noise pollution, no smoke or fumes,”
“It‘s a quite and environment friendly watersport like surfing! Free e- foiling, efoiling matters!”
“Efoiling is a silent peaceful activity with no effect on the environment or other people.”
“Efoils do no harm, cause no pollution and don’t interfere with the environment.”
“Efoiling is fun, has a positive impact on humanity and the environment”
“Wonderful, unique and eco friendly activity for nearly every one.”
“I want to support environment friendly recreation and transport”
“It is the kindest water toy. Silent and does not disturb anyone”
“Less of a hazard than a jet ski. Less noise and wake too.”
“No wake...no disturbance...environmentally excellent”
“Efoil is clean and silent Way safer than a Jetski”

Supporters point out that petrol boats can use the park and electric efoils can’t. Many want clear conditions on where and how to ride instead of a ban.
“It is readily apparent to observers that efoils are not in the same category as jet skis, and banning efoils in a place where powered boats are allowed makes zero sense.”
“Safety rules should be proportionate to the risks at each location. Blanket bans across NSW would be an overreach—clear guidelines and sensible access arrangements would be a far better approach.”
“Efoils get people out on the water enjoying the outdoors and like sailing (which I love) they are not burning fuel and polluting the water. If I can kite board in the same area this ban makes no sense.”
More voices 40
“Efoiling should be accepted within Belongil as a positively managed recreational activity, rather than being subject to blanket bans. With sensible conditions—such as designated areas, speed restrictions, minimum distances from wildlife and other users, and appropriate operating times—efoiling can be conducted responsibly while minimising disturbance to people and the marine environment.”
“I know dozens of e-foil owners who are responsible and who greatly enjoy the sport, there is no need for an outright ban, these devices do no harm to the environment and allow people to get some exercise outdoors.”
“If boats are allowed to launch from the pass and fish in parts I don’t see a problem for foils to be used in a safe and responsible way.”
“…they told me I couldn’t use the foil drive between Lennox and Brunswick. I was told to go and use it at Flat Rock or New Brighton. Basically doesn’t make sense only being able to use it in heavily crowded surf breaks.”
“Restrictions cause bad behavior. Permission allows for rules, controls and self governance.”
“Banning efoiling is an extreme response to something that can easily be managed with sensible safety rules. Our beaches should be places where responsible recreation and innovation are welcomed, not banned.”
“I run a watersports centre that teaches efoiling. We have worked with our harbour authorities on zoning permitting and maintaining access to the activity.”
“There is No need for bans like this, or rules and regulations that are founded on no merit”
“Would love to have the opportunity to try this sport. The ban makes no sense at all.”
“We don’t need senseless regulation of an individual recreational fitness activity.”
“As you say, not the same as a boat or jet ski, need rules that makes sense”
“This matters because it’s about precedence through the state. as a foil drive user I can’t even go as quick as a wave with my motor, until I get on foil and turn the motor off and rise up high enough to glide, and then y that is no different to prone Foiler, arguably far less because I don’t need to competing in space where surfers are. The bias against our sport and designation alongside people on powerful jet skis is absurd in every way. I ride safely and beyond spaces where unpowered craft catch waves, at the moment the blanket rules treat us like as if we fuel powered and speeding dangerously at risk to others, and not welcome to enjoy the ocean the way the other people are.”
“Unnecessary government regulation impacting a safe, environmentally friendly activity because they don’t understand it”
“There’s a huge difference between a foildrive and a jet ski - rules makers need to be sensible.”
“Freedom to do my hobby/sport without unnecessary beaurocracy”
“So we don’t need licenses which is just an revenue raiser”
“I ride a Foildrive board. I know this ban is ridiculous.”
“Regulation destroying innovation and business success”
“Common sense must prevail. We are not jet skis.”
“We do not need more unnecessary regulation.”
“Use common sense. Efoil is not a jetski.”
“Byron is close to where we live, would love to ride there. So important that this new sport is regulated correctly with full transparency and common sense. eFoil era typically ride safely and cleanly (electrically) away from everyone else at low speed. The technology bring more people to safely enjoy our natural oceanic wonderland - it should be encouraged along with full encouragement of the local Australian industry behind it.”
“E-foiling is a meditation that makes you sync with the sea, not try to destroy it. That e-foils are considered PWC’s is a failure to understand what they are. Certainly, restrict their speed in line with other water craft, but to ban them completely seems unfounded.”
“Efoiling is a growing and healthy sport and should be regulated intelligently based on impacts and risks (including exclusion zones near bathers) but not prohibited. For example restrictions designed to protect shore areas from wash should not apply to efoilers).”
“The attempt to shoehorn efoils into an inappropriate and punitive class of watercraft is lazy and misses the opportunity to set up a modern and appropriate way to regulate this activity.”
“This law is madness. We have an environmentally friendly and Safeway to enjoy the ocean. If you’re going to ban Efoils, then you should ban every boat.”
“Because government legislation is based on hype and public opinion not facts Too many regulations in this country without any underlying problems”
“This ruling has always seemed irrational. Local friends would love the chance to ride their floteboards in the area.”
“There should be a common sense approach to this matter rather than a blanket ban.”
“It is not the function of government to regulate every aspect of life.”
“Because needing to licence or register these crafts is ridiculous”
“This is gross overreach. The ocean should be shared by all.”
“Inappropriate and outdated regulatory controls”
“There is a similar bylaw issue in Salcombe, UK and having started Kitesurfing in the early years saw that logical review of regulations and impacts prevailed across most of the UK and the same is needed to change aged bylaws and personal opinions for the good! I learnt at Surfers Paradise and it is such a gentle and considerate sport - no wildlife is impacted, no noise disturbance or accident risk so its purely opinion or historic bylaws that updating!”
“There is need for a different view on efoils in general! This is a new sport that is growing and it doesn’t belong in the regulations of jetskis or boats, it is a different category and we invite the politicians to go out with us on the water so they can experience what is efoiling about.”
“I’m Riding Foil assist in wave spot and what I have seen around me is that sport (e-foil or foil assist) isn’t dangerous or disturbing, it’s the use few people does who is... So we have to educate people, no bannish all the users.”
“Efoiling regulations should flexible and not just something that’s generally not allowed "just because.”
“Would rather see licensure than a ban. Require formal training for ALL powered watercraft!”
“Efoil around the world should be smartly regulated not banned.”
“I dont like senseless asymetric regulations”

Supporters describe riders who keep their distance from swimmers, surfers and wildlife, and teach newcomers to do the same. The survey answers back them up.
How do other water users usually respond to you?
426 riders answered
“I’ve taught efoiling for 5 years and never used my first aid kit, I’ve never had a complaint and never seen the environment detrimentally affected.”
“I have efoiled weekly year-round for over 7 years and always keep my distance from wildlife and those who swim or surf.”
“I respect other recreational water users, I’m almost silent, I don’t leave a wake & I keep my distance from all other water uses.”

“The overwhelming majority of e foil users are safe and are extremely mindful of other ocean users.”
“Having good responsible sportspeople who love the environment on the water is a great way to keep others safe and keep a lookout for things that do need to be reported.”
“My whole group of e foil friends are tuned into keeping it friendly and safe plus we are approached by fascinated onlookers every session. They are keen to see the boards and comment on how they love watching us ride.”
“Contrary to jet skis I find the e-foiling community to be very sensible and respectful.”
“We stay away from swimmers and surfers, as the waves we catch are unbroken and no good for any other craft.”
“I do not want other water users to feel that we should be banned. Self regulation is extremely important.”
“Efoils are not jet skis. They absolutely have the potential to cause harm, just like any water craft. If safety is the major concern, it would not take much to create a license for efoiling that would then allow safe usage of the boards.”
“I ride a foil assist product (similar to an efoil and also an Australian innovation). I’m concerned that misinformation or ill-considered legislation will deny responsible people a reasonable pursuit which does no harm to others.”
“Because next they will come for tow boogies out of ignorance. Mark makes all owners acknowledge safety and courtesy rules every 2 months to renew the throttle operating system”
“Like all crafts on the water there to be used in a fun and safe manner with respect to all crafts with common sense.”
“It allows us to use the ocean safely and puts everybody’s concerns to bay”
“It’s fun, safe and not destructive (unlike boats and jetskis)”
“Need to make sure everyone is safe and having fun”
“We are not jet skis Far safer and more respectful”
“E foil is a great and safe entry into foiling.”
“Ride safely u should be able to ride anywhere”
“Efoiling is a fantastic water based activity that is quiet and safe but often gets compared to jetskis who have established a bad reputation. I feel strongly that all areas of Australia should be open to efoiling and are keen to efoil in many areas around Australia. The sport does an excellent reputation and restrictions should only be imposed if there were incidents and safety issues like there are with e-scooters and e- motorbikes.”
“We all should have access to the water as long as we are being respectful to all water users. Government over regulations is going beyond the intended use, it is infringing on our simple pleasure s. Being able to enjoy to water and waves.”
“I’m ultimately hoping to ride in the surf & my partner & I would clove to travel with our motorhome, Mtn bikes & fliteboards, exploring Australia. We’re both very safety conscious of others and marine life.”
“EFoiling is a beautiful way to explore the ocean without the disturbance of boats or jet skis. … On a eFoil, we are slow and more observant of where we are going as we are cautious for our wellbeing.”
“I stay away from other water users out of politeness and safety. I enjoy the environment without disturbing it. Riding an efoil is not something that should be banned from such a vast area.”
“Ensuring informed legislation is created to allow EFoils to be ridden in all waterways around Australia, while creating standards that provide for safe and inclusive riding.”
“As long as e foilers are respectful to all surfers and water users, swimmers, stand up paddle boards, jet skis, boats, we should all be able to enjoy our beaches.”
“Water sports enable people to enjoy and connect with our incredible coastline, while fostering a greater appreciation and respect for the marine environment.”
“Because its a sport that is great on any water body, is harmless if the foiler is respectful of nature and others and yet has so few places it can be used”
“To not be restricted due to ignorance of people who may have a perceived and or inaccurate view of efoiling to the safety of the public and environment”
“Efoils can be ridden safely and are environmentally friendly and I would hate to see bans spread across NSW and set precedence for other states.”
“The technology is safe for people and the environment. It brings significant joy to everyone who does it with little to no impact on others.”
“Efoils are quiet, nonpoluting and don’t bother other people I always stay away from surfers and ride swell not breaking waves”

“EFoiling is one of the best ways to enjoy and respect Mother Nature!”
“Self control is more than enough, bans don’t work, education does.”
“Because we are zero emissions, safe and responsible ocean users.”
“Want to help promote safe and cooperative use of our water”
“Safety of all water users and marine life is a fundamental”
“Because I love it and I’m always respectful”
“Efoiling is still a relatively new area of watersports, and my concern is overregulation based on a lack of understanding of the sport and the equipment. In my experience, it often seems easier to simply say no to eFoil riders than to take the time to understand how the equipment works and how responsible riders can safely share the water with others.”
“Makes no sense to ban, responsible ownership, flute major contributor to the local economy. Lack of awareness of the craft. Understand before you ban”
“Byron has always been a place I’ve wanted to visit since starting Fliteboarding. Efoils are safe, quiet and have such a small footprint.”
“It’s our individual responsibility to protect access to the ocean, while utilizing the safest vessels to protect marine life habitats.”
“Riding an Efoil is a quiet, safe and peaceful experience that more people should have a chance to enjoy.”
“It is a fun safe activity to do with others who share the same passion for fun and the ocean as I do.”
“Freedom to enjoy efoiling in the sea, as it is safe for other water users and marine life.”
“Educating is the key. Efoiling is quite, safe and respects nature.”
“Foiling is just surfing further out, so safer if anything.”
“I find most foilers are responsible and respectful”
Evidence from the six-year trial at Byron Bay, and from riders with years of experience, shows that the risk efoils pose to the environment and other water users is no greater than that of surfing or boating, and often less.

The rule that keeps efoils out of the park was written for jet skis. Supporters say efoils share none of the noise, speed or pollution that got jet skis banned.
“I don’t believe people’s freedoms to enjoy the activities they love should be restricted by some unconsidered and arbitrary rule, simply placing efoils in the JetSki box because no more appropriate box exists.”
“E-foils are vastly different to jet skis and require separate classification. Minimal noise, almost zero wake and no emissions.”
“There are amazing places that I’d like to ride but can not due to the fact my efoil is classed as a JetSki and they are completely different in terms of safety, noise, environmental impact and public perception.”

“We’re quite a different, quiet, zen-like cohort. Nothing like jet-skis & therefore shouldn’t be regulated like jet-skis.”
“The efoil is nothing like a jet ski, they are quiet, and seeking to ride waves. The rider has unlimited vision in front and an elevated riding position.”
“There is a great deal of difference between a noisy overly fast, petrol, driven jet ski and a quiet electrical powered slow speed surfboard (flyte board). We should not be applying the same rules across the board.”
“The efoil sounds like a great invention and NOTHING like a noisy, water-churning jet ski.”
“I ride a foil assist, not an efoil, but still want a proper classification/understanding from NSW Maritime and National Parks depts.”
“It’s really important that efoil is understood by the authorities for being an ecological activity. And as electric bikes are not in the same category as motorcycles must have its place in law.”
“These requests are in line with premium foil locations. It provides diversity. They are nothing like jet skis and should be in their own right.”
“Common sense they need to look at the noise and the wake and specifically what lan efoil is and create a new classification for it based on its essence not throwing it in with Jet Ski as the same animal”
“I witness lots of people e foiling near my home and I would love to participate, however when I looked it up and they were banned due to classification similar to JetSkis however they are silent.”
“Efoils are quiet and have little effect on others when used as designed. No major issue if classified as some sort of boat, but lumping them with PWC’s makes no sense as they are not a Jetski.”
“EFoils are fundamentally different to jetskis and should have their own classification to permit their safe (and broader) use”
“I sell Efoil’s. It’s not a JetSki! Efoils certainly don’t attract the same crowd that behave badly on JetSkis.”
“Efoil is not a jetski and needs its own classification otherwise may be overly restricted where can ride.”
“Comparing and banning an Efoil to a Jet Ski is wrong and needs to be corrected.”
“I’d like to ride in places they are banned because the JetSki rule”
“A E foil is a surf craft not a jet ski and is my preferred choice”
“I ride a foil drive and we get classified the same.”
“We have deliberately chosen a JetSki alternative. To be classified as one is pure government incompetence and lack of curiosity.”
“The law needs to reflect a difference between efoils and PWC’s, as efoils have no negative impact at all.”
“We should not be in the same category with jet ski’s it makes no sense.”
“EFoil are different to jet skis and should be treated as such.”
“Efoils and jet skis are the complete opposite.”

“It is not the same as jet skiing. It is a new sport and short be assessed on its own merits as a sport similar to surfing.”
“People much prefer it over jetskis or speedboats”

Supporters say NSW should be proud that Fliteboard was invented here, and that rules written before efoils existed shouldn’t decide their future.
“Byron should be leading on innovation like this, not shutting it out.”
“Clever ideas that are homegrown, proven, safe and globally embraced need to be supported here in Australia. It is outrageous that this situation is happening to such a brilliant product, and in its birthplace.”
“I’ve been riding an efoil off Noosa for over five years, and some mornings it’s just me, glassy water and no sound at all. I’d hate to think anyone else who loves that feeling could be shut out of the ocean over a rule written before these boards even existed.”

E foiling is a modern, clean, easy, environmentally friendly way to enjoy our water and I’m grateful for it as an innovation and technology now available. It has changed my acres to the water. With under lying health concern it is now my replacement to traditional foiling, surfing and kiteboarding for the rest of my water sport life which I hope to be about another 40 years. The general public love them too.”
